Design Rationale
As a fan of Aladdin, I created a Just Dance video inspired by Disney’s Aladdin, where I portrayed four characters: Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, and Jafar. Each character was carefully developed to highlight their unique traits through costume, gestures, and performance. Aladdin’s confident and free-spirited personality, Jasmine’s grace and strength, Genie’s humor and flamboyance, and Jafar’s imposing demeanor were portrayed using distinct dance styles, costumes, and expressions.
By mixing Eastern-inspired vibes with something super pop-culture like Just Dance choreography, the video plays with how stories like Aladdin get reimagined around the world. It’s a celebration of Aladdin, but it also gently asks: how much do we change things when we bring them into mainstream media?
With this edit, I wanted to make something that’s fun to watch for fans like us, but also gets people thinking—about identity, cultural mashups, and how fan-made stuff can explore those ideas in creative, meaningful ways.
Documentation
1.Planning and Character Research:
— I analysed Aladdin’s key characters to capture their signature traits, including body language, expressions, and costumes.
—I selected a Disney-themed Just Dance track that matched the franchise’s tone and energy.
2.Performance and Costume Preparation:
—To embody the four characters, I performed separate dance routines for Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, and Jafar. I ensured that each character’s gestures, energy, and costume accurately reflected their role in the Aladdin universe. Aladdin’s movements were playful and agile, Jasmine’s were elegant and determined, Genie’s were exaggerated and whimsical, and Jafar’s were slow and authoritative, mirroring their personalities.
3. Post-production
After recording the individual performances, I moved to the editing phase:
1.Split-Screen:
I used split-screen editing to present all four characters on-screen simultaneously, creating an illusion of interaction. This editing choice emphasizes the theme of transformation and disguise, central to Aladdin’s narrative (from street rat to prince).
2. Transitions
I synchronised the dance movements with the song’s beats, ensuring fluid transitions between characters and enhancing the dynamic feel of the video.
