Aladdin Fan Edit

This page is all about our Aladdin fan edit, which follows Princess Jasmine’s journey and highlights the emotional and thematic moments that make her arc so powerful. We’ve blended action, music, and visuals to bring her story to life in a way that feels dynamic, heartfelt, and true to her growth. Enjoy!

Design rationale

I set out to create an edit that would resonate with fans while capturing the core themes of the story. In doing so, I focused on the elements that resonated most with me—particularly how Jasmine subverts traditional gender roles. Rather than embodying stereotypically feminine traits like passivity, and dependency, or concluding her arc solely through romance, she emerges as a more diverse, androgynous, and balanced character. Jasmine actively participates in the story's key turning points and pursues leadership, aspiring to rule as the next Sultan.

Creative Workflow and Scene Selection

The development of this edit was closely integrated with my initial viewing experience of the film. Rather than separating the watching and editing stages, I adopted a dynamic workflow—capturing footage that stood out to me in real time and placing it directly onto the timeline. This immediate approach allowed me to work with scenes that were still fresh in my mind, streamlining the early stages of the editing process.

For instance, moments of thematic or visual parallelism—such as Jasmine’s two renditions of “Speechless,” which differ markedly in tone and context—were easier to identify and organize as I encountered them. This method reduced the need for excessive backtracking during the actual edit, enabling a more intuitive and fluid construction of the narrative.

I did later revisit the film in full to fill in structural gaps and refine the sequence. The following scenes have been deliberately selected when watching the movie to illustrate Jasmine’s character arc:

Documentation

The editing software I used for this project was CapCut, chosen for its accessibility and flexibility in creating visually rhythmic, music-driven storytelling. At the heart of this edit is the song “Speechless” from the Aladdin (2019) soundtrack, which serves both as a thematic anchor and a structural guide.

Part I: Jasmine Before Finding Her Voice

As a fan of Aladdin (2019), one of the things that really stood out to me was how Jasmine’s journey is about so much more than romance—it's about her fight to be heard. In this first part of the edit, set to the opening lines of “Speechless,” I focused on scenes where she’s clearly held back—trapped in the palace, pressured to marry, constantly told what she can’t do. I used a film-like frame, soft transitions, and muted tones to capture that feeling of being stuck, almost like she’s being watched or boxed in. These early moments show just how much Jasmine is carrying emotionally, and why her eventual transformation feels so powerful and deserved.

Part II: Jasmine Owning Her Power

Right after the chorus kicks in with “I won’t go speechless / You can’t keep me quiet,” everything in the edit shifts. The pace picks up, the energy rises, and you can just feel that Jasmine isn’t holding back anymore. The transitions get sharper, the visuals are bolder—it’s all about her stepping into her power. I really wanted this part to show how much she’s grown: she’s not just standing up for herself, she’s leading, making choices, and taking control of her own story. This is where she truly becomes the Jasmine we all root for.

Creative choices

I took the parts where Jafar tries to silence Jasmine and added a muffled audio effect to his voice. I wanted it to feel like his words were fading into the background—like she was tuning him out. It’s a way to show how Jasmine is starting to block out all the voices telling her who she should be, and instead, focus on her own strength and voice. It’s a small touch, but it really adds to the feeling that she’s taking her power back.

I also added a long exposure effect during one of the transitions to show how Jasmine’s emotions carry over from the moments where she feels trapped to when she starts taking control. The light trails kind of symbolize how everything she’s been through—her doubts, her strength, her pain—builds into who she becomes. It gives the edit a dreamier, more reflective vibe, and reminds us that her transformation doesn’t happen all at once—it’s something that grows over time.

I added a film-like frame to give the edit a nostalgic, memory-like feel—like we’re looking back on Jasmine’s journey. At the same time, keeping her in the center of the frame throughout adds this subtle feeling that she’s being watched or judged, which fits with how trapped and controlled she is early on. It’s a small visual detail, but it helps show how much pressure she’s under and how that makes her growth later on even more powerful.
